Symbols are the main mechanic of the game. Each game starts with the 5 specific starter symbols (
) in the deck (as well as additional
Duds depending on the Floor), and after each spin of the slot machine the player gets the choice to add one of 3 random symbols. Each symbol in the deck can show up on the slot machine reels. When a symbol shows up on a reel, it pays out with an amount of Coins and may activate a special ability. They can be boosted by certain items.
There are 152 total symbols: 43 Common, 55 Uncommon, 38 Rare, 9 Very Rare, and 7 Special.
Symbols also have a sprite size of 12x12 pixels.

Some symbols have been removed from the game for various reasons.
In the Content Patch 2 change logs under "Game Balance", it is written:
"The removal of some symbols was done to reduce the total number of symbols in the 'symbol pool.' This will make it easier for players to get more beneficial symbols, as opposed to deciding between 3 copies of the same symbol mechanics-wise (which could happen before). The symbols chosen to be removed from the game are ones that are functionally the same in many situations, such as Pear being functionally the same as Cherry."

Whenever a random symbol is generated, the chance of it being a given rarity changes throughout the game. The base chances are in the table below. When a rarity multiplier is applied, it directly multiplies the uncommon, rare, and very rare chances. If the chance of getting a higher rarity is 100%, then it becomes impossible to get a lower rarity symbol. For example, with a 5x multiplier at the 5th time rent is paid, there is an effective 2.5% chance of rolling very rare; 7.5% chance of rolling rare; 90% chance of rolling uncommon; 0% chance of rolling common.
The above rules apply to both symbols added after a spin, and symbols added by other symbols or items during a spin.
All symbols that have rarity multipliers are in the internal group named raritymod
: Cat,
Hex of Tedium,
Rabbit Fluff, and
Shiny Pebble. (
Cat only has a rarity modifier if you also have
Lucky Cat.) This group does not include items.
